Subduction refers to the process of the pacific plate diving beneath the North American continent, where the ocean floor is ground away and recycled into the Earth’s mantle. This tectonic movement gave us the Coast Range Mountains and gave rise to the Cascades, the two mountain ranges that define the separate landscapes of our home in Oregon. It also yields the devastating earthquakes, tsunamis and volcanic eruptions that cyclically reshape the Northwest.

The record starts in the Pacific Ocean and moves eastward through the temperate rainforests, over the high Cascades and out to the High Desert of the East. Our goal was to depict the landscapes of the Northwest as separate pieces of music representing a temporary moment within the infinite process of the earth consuming and regenerating itself.
